Smadi elected new EuroCham head; urges stronger trade ties with EU

Amman, April 26 (Petra) –During its first meeting following its election by acclamation, the newly elected board of directors of the European Chamber of Commerce in Jordan (EuroCham), picked Mohammad Smadi as its new head for the 2026-2029 term.

According to an EuroCham statement issued on Sunday, the board also elected Ahmad Sallakh as vice president, Bilal Shawar as treasurer, Dr. Anwar Obeidat as secretary, while Ayman Rifai, Raed Bitar, and Mohammad Ali Qaryouti as members.

Samadi stated the new board's formation comes amid increasing national focus on bolstering economic growth, attracting investments, and expanding exports, in line with the objectives of the Economic Modernization Vision.

He added that the European Union countries constitute a "key" economic partner for Jordan in terms of trade, investment, and the transfer of expertise and technology.

Jordanian-European summit held in the Kingdom earlier this year represents an "important" milestone in strengthening the strategic dialogue between the two sides, he pointed out.

During the first month of this year, he noted the 54.3% increase in the Kingdom's exports to EU countries is a "positive" indicator reflecting the "improved competitiveness" of Jordanian products and the growing benefits derived from signed agreements.

Smadi noted His Majesty King Abdullah II's efforts have played a fundamental role in strengthening trade and investment cooperation and opening "broader" horizons for Jordanian products to enhance their presence in EU markets, which are a key economic partner for Jordan.

On future vision, he said the chamber will play a "pivotal" role in supporting ties between the Jordanian private sector and its EU counterparts and facilitating trade and investment flows.

He said this effort aligns with the "deep-rooted" Jordanian-European partnership and supporting His Majesty's efforts to strengthen the Kingdom's strategic relations with EU countries, particularly in the economic sphere.

On its impact, he stated enhanced access of Jordanian products to EU countries is a "vital" avenue for export growth, which requires the expansion of partnerships with the European private sector and activation of technical and trade cooperation programs to ensure continued growth and achieve more ambitious outcomes in the coming period.

Smadi affirmed the chamber is "committed" to strengthening its role and providing tangible value to its members and the business environment in the Kingdom to align with goals of the Jordanian-European Partnership and the Economic Modernization Vision.
